  • Pedometers will be given out at kick-off walk(s) on Saturday, Oct. 1st and at the Winter Park Farmer’s Market (look for the big Healthy Central Florida Fire Truck) and at participating locations which include the Winter Park Public Library, Maitland Public Library, Track Shack and others (check back for updated locations).

HONOR CODE: Healthy Central Florida (HCF) is hopeful that everyone will be honest and log only steps actually taken. To protect everyone from anyone who would abuse the honor system, HCF and Walker Tracker will be monitoring activity and reserve the right to verify Walk90 reported step counts. If fraudulent step counts are discovered, that participant will be automatically disqualified. Therefore participants are encouraged to use verifiable tracking devices, such as Fitbits, Map My Walk (free app), Nike+ Move (free app) or other. At a minimum, a diary of routes and activity are encouraged – especially for those putting up large step counts. If you have any questions, please contact jhamiltonbuss@healthycf.org.

Good Bye, Party City! HELLO, CHAMBERLIN’S!

Category : Latest News

ChamberlinsWell, this was a pleasant surprise to stumble uponCHAMBERLIN’s, one of our favorite “old school” health food/grocery stores, is relocating from Winter Park to a new 10,000-square-foot store on East Colonial Drive near Orlando Executive Airport this July (in the location that used to be home to Party City)!

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Chamberlin’s closed its store in Winter Park Village last week to make room for upscale outdoors-gear seller REI. Chamberlin’s occupied the North Orlando Avenue spot for about four decades, watching the corridor turn from a mall into an upscale shopping center. The road also became a busy traffic route.

Winter Park has recently become filled with health-food stores, adding Trader Joe’s in 2014 with a new Whole Foods planned for later this year.

chamberlinsChamberlin’s has been in the area since 1935 when it opened in downtown Orlando as Chamberlin’s Market and Café. Its shelves were stocked with whole-grain flours, beans and cereals and it remained much the same over the years.

After changing hands in 1972, it was eventually sold to Akin’s Natural Foods in Tulsa, Okla., in 2000.

It still has six smaller stores throughout the area that are about 6,000 square feet each. The Winter Park Village store had been the company’s biggest for several years; at about 12,000 square feet, it was the only one with produce and some other items.

The store will have much the same lineup of products, including vitamins and supplements.

Chamberlin’s takes the place of a former Party City store in the Herndon Village Shops plaza. The store will have about 25 employees with most moving from the Winter Park store.

REI is set to open at Winter Park Village in 2017.

Showtime’s Michael Jackson Doc Premieres 2/5/16

Unless you are heading to Sundance & can catch it there, don’t miss the premiere of the new documentary Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off The Wall (directed by Spike Lee) on Friday, February 5th on Showtime!

Here’s what we know about the doc: The film focuses on a rarely examined chapter of Jackson’s career as he evolves from the lead singer of Jackson 5 to a solo artist recording what will become his breakthrough, seminal 1979 pop record, Off The Wall. Audiences will travel with the global superstar as he strikes a new path with CBS Records, first with his brothers as The Jacksons and then stepping out on his own to create his own music with his own team. This illuminating portrait traces how an earnest, passionate, hard-working young man becomes the “King of Pop.”

MICHAEL JACKSON’S JOURNEY FROM MOTOWN TO OFF THE WALL contains a wealth of footage, including material from Michael’s personal archive, and in his own words. The documentary also includes interviews with prominent entertainment and sports stars including Lee Daniels, The Weeknd, Pharrell Williams, Kobe Bryant, Misty Copeland, Mark Ronson, John Legend, Questlove, L.A. Reid, and more, as well as his parents Katherine and Joe Jackson, and his brothers Jackie and Marlon Jackson.

Off The Wall created a whole new category in pop music. Written by Michael Jackson, the first single from Off The Wall, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” earned Jackson his first Grammy® and was his first single to hit No. 1 in the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist. The album was an enormous commercial success; as of 2014 it is certified eight times platinum in the United States and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Off The Wall not only “invented pop music as we know it,” wrote Rolling Stone, it transcended music and entertainment altogether, becoming an important moment in African-American history.

The film is produced by Spike Lee, John Branca and John McClain.
